WASHINGTON, (Reuters) –The U.S. House of Representatives has enough votes to stop a $1 trillion bill for infrastructure that Speaker Nancy Pelosi championed. This bill will continue until a bigger social spending bill is approved by the House. Their leader stated this on Thursday.

Emerging from a meeting of her 95-member Congressional Progressive (NYSE:) Caucus after President Joe Biden’s visit https://www.reuters.com/world/us/biden-give-update-democrats-spending-plans-before-europe-trip-source-2021-10-28 to the Capitol, Representative Pramila Jayapal said her group supported Biden’s vision for a $1.75 trillion social spending and climate change bill, but not until they had seen detailed legislative language on it.

Since long, progressives have stated they will not vote in support of the infrastructure bill. It passed with bipartisan support in the Senate on August 8. However, the details for the larger bill which had once been targeted at $3.5 trillion were still being worked out.

Jayapal stated that there are not enough votes to allow the vote on today’s bill to be passed. “We need the text, and we need to vote on both House bills simultaneously.”

Jayapal stated that she would not refuse to support a president-direct call. She also noted that Pelosi, and not Biden, had asked for Thursday’s vote.

Jayapal stated earlier that he did not. Jayapal said earlier that he would vote for both bills. “He said the votes on these bills would be decisive in how the outside world perceives us.”
