ROME (Reuters) – Thousands marched through Rome Saturday to protest climate change at the Summit of Leaders of the Group of 20 Major Economies. They called on leaders of these 20 countries to take action and guarantee fair access to COVID-19 vaccinations.

The march was led by climate activists, who marched with colourful placards and danced to demand that world leaders protect the environment.

Edoardo Mentrasti, a protester said that they are protesting against G20’s inaction on environmental and social issues.

Students and workers marched with them in the city under high security alert. There were up to 6,000 police officers and 500 soldiers on duty to keep order. The G20 summit has caused Metro stations to be closed, and bus routes have been diverted.

Italian police are concerned about rising tensions after violent demonstrations in Italy over mandatory COVID for workers escalated into violence when neofascists attacked headquarters of the CGIL labor union in Rome.

Protesters marched alongside the Tiber river banks, holding large signs that read “stop patents. Vaccines are a global Right”.

Two days of talks were held by the G20 leaders in the morning. The goal was to accept the existence of climate risk, but to not take on new, radical, commitments to mitigate global warming.

“There’s an alternative to a developmental model that involves 20 world’s most powerful heads of states meeting together in a conference room and deciding the fate for the entire world,” said demonstrator Luca Ianniello.

A small, separate protest against the Italian government was also taking place just a few kilometres from here.

The summit center, which is located in the suburb of Benito Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship of the 20th Century, has been kept away from demonstrators.
