REUTERS/Matthew Childs/File PhotographLONDON, (Reuters) – Uber (NYSE::) London drivers will have the option to lease or buy a Tesla (NASDAQ::) car starting Wednesday. This is part of an incentive program to encourage electric vehicle use.
Since Uber introduced a clean air fee, which adds 3 pence (4 cents) to every mile of a passenger trip in London, more than 135 million pounds has been collected for drivers to use towards environmentally-friendly models at discounted rates with partners such as Nissan (OTC:) and Kia.
Uber confirmed that Tesla will join the program. It was just over one week since Uber had announced its partnership with Hertz, which would allow Uber to provide 50,000 Teslas in rental for their ride-hailing drivers.
Uber has more electric cars in London than any other city, with over 4,000 Uber drivers switching to them.
Jamie Heywood from Uber, Northern and Eastern Europe’s boss said: “There are still many things to be done to improve urban transportation and create a sustainable recovery.”
