KABUL, (Reuters) – The United Nations child’s agency stated that they were planning to create a system to fund teachers in Afghanistan directly after an international freeze was placed on funds to Taliban-led governments.

Jeannette Vogelaar from UNICEF Afghanistan, the Chief of Education said in an email that UNICEF was establishing a system which will permit direct payments to teachers, without funds going through the de facto authorities.

As preparation for the event, she stated that UNICEF would register all public school teachers.

Continue supporting teachers and schools in Afghanistan for girls’ education is the best way. Vogelaar stated that UNICEF urges donors not to abandon Afghanistan’s children.

The Islamist Taliban Movement took over Afghanistan in August 2015. Since then, Afghanistan’s public service, including health and education have plunged into chaos.

Many countries have banned funding to non-humanitarian aid agencies through multilateral channels.

It has been limited to emergency supplies, such as blankets or wheat. This leaves teachers and public employees without pay for many months. The frozen assets of the Afghan central bank have been worth billions of dollars.

Alarm has been raised by the international community that Taliban might limit female education. In many areas of Afghanistan, high schools for girls remain closed while the ones for boys are allowed to open.

Reuters was told this week by a Taliban official that there will be “good news soon” about older girls returning to school. He also said they are working closely with UNICEF, UNDP and other international organizations on the matter.

Waheedullah Hashimi (Director of External Programs and Aid, Ministry of Education in Afghanistan) said that they are working with UNICEF and other international organizations to find a solution.

He said, “We are facing a crisis economically and we need your help to solve it.”
