JAKARTA (Reuters – Indonesian government takes over land assets associated with an automaker business owned by late President Suharto. This is the latest attempt at recovering money from this once powerful family.

This was part of broader efforts to recover $7.7 Billion in unpaid bank loans incurred during 1997-1998’s financial crisis.

After defaulting on state bank loans during the crisis, the carmaker PT Timor Putra Nasional (controlled by Suharto’s youngest child, Hutomo Mandala Putra) has an unpaid debt of 2.6 trillion rupiah ($180.87million).

It stated that although the government issued notices to seize collateral assets, it had not taken the items over because of “obstacles at the ground”.

Authorities sealed assets in Karawang, West Java on Friday. They claimed that four parcels of land with total area of 120 hectares (1.2 million sqm) were subject to the sealing.

Local media reports that hundreds of military and police personnel attended the event.

Tommy Suharto was unable to be reached, and both his legal assistants as well as Tommy’s lawyer didn’t respond to numerous requests for comment.

Media reports claim that his lawyer was present at meetings with authorities regarding Timor’s debt.

The government tried to get funds back from the company several times, even taking it to court.

Timor was assigned during Suharto to construct the national car of Indonesia.

Critics claimed that the older Suharto died January 2008 with 620080127 or more in kickbacks and deals. This was something he and his family have always denied.

Tommy was once jailed after he paid a hitman for the murder of a judge. He is currently chairman of Berkarya, which did not win any seats in the national parliament during the 2019 elections. He also manages PT Humpuss Intermoda Transportasi, a ship-transporting company.
