FBI Warning: Fake Crypto ATM and QR Code Payment Schemes
  • FBI warns public of fraudulent QR codes and ATM scams.
  • This warning alert was issued by the FBI due to rising hacker activity.

Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued another warning about fraudulent schemes using fake crypto ATMs or QR codes payment services within the crypto industry.

The FBI cited the report to show that scammers still ask their victims to use physical crypto ATMs and QR codes to make payments. This is done mainly via constant internet communication. They also have many frauds in their payment systems.

According to the FBI, it is important that people refrain from engaging in malicious activity within the crypto sector. The authority highlighted the fact that these fake schemes typically involve online romance schemes, impersonation schemes, lottery and many other activities.

The FBI stated that the schemes used to make transactions with crypto ATMs or QR codes are very similar. The scammer may ask victims for money, which can sometimes be used to direct them to withdraw funds from retirement or investment accounts.

The hackers will usually provide a QR code which is linked to their crypto wallet. This allows the victim to enter and buy cryptocurrency at any ATM. There is step-by–step guidance throughout the process until payment is completed. The victim is then scammed by this fraudulent activity.

To curb the increasing scammers’ activities, the FBI advised the public not to make payments to people they don’t know. People should not accept instructions to scan QR codes online from anyone they don’t know.
