NEW YORK, (Reuters) – Tears were shed, airline personnel applauded and cameras flashed when Kai Patel, a 1-year-old, met his grandmother at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

After months https://www.reuters.com/world/the-great-reboot/grandmother-grandson-finally-meet-us-flights-reopen-2021-11-05 of only being able to talk to her grandson via FaceTime, Bhavna Patel was elated to be hugging Kai and holding his hands as he toddled around the terminal.

She wiped her eyes and said “There are no words.” How can you explain this feeling?”

Bhavna Patel and her daughter Bindiya were two of the passengers on BA001, the first New York-bound British Airways flight leaving Heathrow after the United States lifted COVID-19 restrictions https://www.reuters.com/world/us/international-travellers-head-united-states-flights-reopen-2021-11-08 that have barred much of the world from entering for over 20 months.

Donald Trump, then-President of the United States, imposed COVID-19’s first restrictions to non-US citizens who traveled from China in January 2020. This ban was later extended to numerous other countries.

British flag carrier marked moment of reopening the aircraft with first flight for family and friends who had been separated by the pandemic.

Families have not been allowed to meet in person for almost two years because of the extraordinary restrictions.

Kushal Kai’s father stated that Kai was most upset by the fact that he couldn’t introduce him to his daughter and his mother earlier.

Kushal Patel, when asked what his family would do for Bhavna & Bindiya during their 10-day visit to India, said that he wanted to let them “let them hug Kai [as much as they can]” to start.

“We’re trying make up for a year of not seeing each other,” said he.

Bhavna agreed with Bhavna that the only thing she wanted for the next week was to sit and stare at her grandson.

She said that she had other New York relatives, and that she would say, “These ten days are for him,” while gazing lovingly at Kai.
