BEIJING (Reuters). ByteDance’s Douyin, China’s version of TikTok announced on Friday that Tencent had asked it to permit short videos based upon Tencent’s TV programs and copyrighted movies to appear on Douyin.

Douyin stated that Tencent’s decision meets Chinese regulators’ requirement to establish an open internet. Douyin added, “We are happy Tencent’s copyrighted material can be shared on Douyin.”

Tencent stated Friday that the company was testing an initiative to eventually allow third party creators to incorporate some copyrighted content into their works. It also invited other platforms for help in promoting them.

This breakthrough comes after years of tension between these social media rivals. Chinese regulators also reprimanded this year about “walled gardens”, a practice in which rivals can’t have their links shared on their platforms.

After Tencent Video filed a lawsuit for copyright violation against Douyin, Douyin took thousands of videos from users that were related to the television series.

ByteDance said that in its Friday statement it also stated that Tencent’s messaging application WeChat had been repeatedly used by ByteDance to recover the login and sharing functions for Douyin as well as its video-streaming service Xigua.

WeChat users are currently able to share Douyin links and Xigua URLs if the app is updated. Tencent has declined to comment.
