KUALA LUMPUR, (Reuters) – Canada suspended imports of Supermax Corp Malaysian gloves maker while it awaits results from an audit. This comes weeks after US authorities barred Supermax Corp due to allegations that the firm uses forced labor.

Malaysian manufacturers of everything, from palm oil to medical gloves, are increasingly being investigated for abuses by foreign workers.

Canada’s Public Services and Procurement department stated Wednesday that Supermax orders were being held pending a report by Supermax Healthcare Canada.

The department released a statement saying that Canada had reached out to Supermax Corp in order to ensure they did not engage in forced labor practices in light of current circumstances.

Supermax has not yet responded to my request for comment.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has issued an “Withhold Release Order” Oct 21. It prohibits Supermax imports based on reasonably available information that shows the use of forced labor in its manufacturing processes.

Supermax stated that they were in touch with the U.S. Agency to get more information and had hired an independent consultant firm to audit the situation of its foreign workers.

Canada stated that it would decide its next steps following review of the Supermax Canadian Unit report.

It stated that the Government of Canada was committed to not doing business with any companies using unethical practices either in their own supply chains or directly.
