MOSCOW (Reuters), – Russia started supplying India S-400 missile defense systems. This was reported by Russian news agencies on Sunday, citing Dmitry Shugayev who is the head of Russia’s military cooperation agency.

India is now at risk from sanctions by the United States due to supplies. This was in accordance with a U.S. 2017 law that discourages countries from purchasing Russian military hardware.

Interfax quoted Shugayev saying that “the first supplies have been started” at a Dubai aerospace trade fair on Sunday.

According to him, the S-400 system’s first unit will be delivered in India before the year ends.

India’s $5.5 Billion deal to purchase five long-range surface/air missile systems was signed in 2018.

Under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, (CAATSA), India is subject to a variety of sanctions. This includes financial sanctions against India.

New Delhi stated that it is in a strategic relationship with Russia as well as the United States. Washington, however, said India would not be granted a waiver by CAATSA.

The United States imposed sanctions last year citing CAATSA against NATO ally Turkey in regard to its purchase of S-400 missiles (Russia) Presidency of Defence Industries was the target of these sanctions.

Washington removed Turkey also from the F-35 stealth jet fighter program. It is one of the most advanced U.S.-made aircraft, and was used by NATO countries as well as other U.S. allies.

Russia claimed it offered Turkey assistance in the development of advanced fighter jets, but there has not been an agreement.

Shugayev said on Sunday that “We are still in a stage for negotiations on this project,” RIA New Agency quoted him as saying.
