Audi supervisory board to discuss McLaren partnership on Wednesday

HAMBURG, (Reuters) – Audi’s Supervisory Board will be discussing on Wednesday how the company can enter Formula One via possible partnership with McLaren Automotive. Two sources said to Reuters that Tuesday’s decision was not yet made.

Audi is owned by Volkswagen and the board of Volkswagen (DE) discussed how to get into Formula One at its meeting last week. Two anonymous sources said that this was done.

One source claimed that Oliver Blume, Porsche CEO and Audi CEO Markus Duesmann were “ardent supporters of Formula One”.

McLaren Automotive denied Monday’s report that Audi bought British luxury sportscar manufacturer, but said it was open to technology collaboration with “relevant partners and suppliers.”

Audi spokesperson told Reuters the company is “looking into various cooperation ideas”. However, it did not say whether they are discussing a potential sale with McLaren.

The acquisition of the automaker would give Audi a second supercar to go along with Lamborghini which it owns since 1998.

Automobilwoche in Germany reported that Audi was especially interested in Formula 1 on Sunday.
