VIENNA (Reuters – Russia chided America for threatening a diplomat escalation towards Iran at U.N.’s nuclear watchdog next week unless it improves its cooperation with the agency. This was in response to the fact that it could harm wider discussions on the Iran Nuclear Deal.
On Thursday, the United States threatened to confront Iran at The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if Iran does not resolve at least one conflict with it. This included its refusal to allow the IAEA to reinstall cameras in a workshop following an attack that occurred in June.
Russian ambassador to IAEA Mikhail Ulyanov said that while he believes that this shows that American counterparts have lost patience, he also stated that all Americans need to be able to control their emotions.
“I do not welcome the U.S. delegation’s particular statement (at IAEA). It is not useful.”
After a break of five months, direct talks between Iran and the United States to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement between Tehran and the major powers will resume Monday. This follows a five month hiatus that began after Ebrahim Raisi’s election as Iran’s hardline president.
Iran was subject to sanctions lifted in 2015, but the agreement included restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities. In 2018, Donald Trump, then-President of the United States, pulled Washington from the 2015 agreement and imposed new sanctions on Tehran.
Iran responded to many of these restrictions by reducing time required to get enough fissile matter to create a bomb. Tehran denied that Iran would seek nuclear weapons.
The U.S. didn’t negotiate with Iran for very long and failed to remember that Iranians won’t respond well under pressure. Ulyanov stated that Iranians will resist pressure if they feel under pressure. This was apparently in reference to the fact U.S. and Iranian diplomats have not been meeting.
