Russian court remands mine director, inspectors in custody after deadly accident -Breaking

MOSCOW (Reuters), – A Siberian court placed five persons in detention for two months in connection to a mine accident which claimed the lives of more than 50 victims this week.

A spokesperson from the regional prosecutor’s offices stated that three managers at the Listvyazhnaya coal mine, along with its director were placed in detention until January 31st for violating industrial safety standards.

Two safety inspectors were also taken into custody by the court. They had been issued certificates for the mine earlier in the month, but hadn’t actually checked it.

Regional authorities believe the accident was caused by methane explosions. 51 people died, five of them rescuers sent to help men trapped deep underground.

According to TASS news agency, 60 persons were admitted to hospital by the health ministry for injuries suffered at the mine.

This accident, which occurred at a distance of 3,500km (2,200 mi) east from Moscow, in the Kemerovo area, was Russia’s worst since 2010, when explosions claimed the lives of 91 at the Raspadskaya mining site in the same region.
