WASHINGTON (Reuters), – U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced Tuesday that the Pentagon would not finance National Guard soldiers who refused to receive COVID-19 vaccinations.

In August, the Pentagon mandated the vaccination for all military personnel. The vast majority of active duty troops received the required dose.

Austin’s decision, as outlined in a memo seen at Reuters, came a day after he refused to allow the Oklahoma governor exemption for National Guard troops from a mandate to provide vaccines across all military branches.

The dates for National Guard troops vary depending on the service they belong to.
