MANILA (Reuters – Philippine Senator Christopher Go, Rodrigo Duterte’s preferred successor, announced Tuesday that he is withdrawing from the race for the presidency.
Go was President Duterte’s longtime aide. He had hinted recently that he could drop out. This leaves the administration without an official presidential candidate. Duterte was yet to announce his support.
Go spoke in a quick speech streaming on Facebook (NASDAQ): “I and President Duterte will support anyone that can truly serve and continue to protect Duterte’s legacy towards more comfortable, safe, and prosperous lives for our kids.”
Go claimed he made the supreme sacrifice to the nation’s good and unity for our supporters and leaders.
Duterte’s daughter Sara Duterte–Carpio, Davao Mayor, is also running to be the deputy. He will face Ferdinand Marcos Jr. who emerged early as the frontrunner.
In May 2022, the Southeast Asian country of 110 million will hold elections for positions ranging from President to Governors, Mayors, and Local Officials.
Duterte is 76 years old and cannot run for reelection. However, he intends to seek a seat in next year’s senate.
