MOSCOW, (Reuters) – Russia announced Monday that 30 more tanks were being added to its base in Tajikistan and that the forces of its force had conducted exercises using missile defence systems. The move demonstrates Moscow’s concern over instability in Afghanistan.

Moscow fears that Islamist militants could infiltrate Tajikistan, and other Central Asian former Soviet republics. Moscow regards the area as a buffer south.

Russian forces practiced on Monday repelling an enemy air attack against military installations using their S-300PS system, Interfax reported.

Ex-Soviet Tajikistan’s base, Russia’s biggest outside of its borders, was used for the drills. It simulated 10 missile launch against air targets.

According to reports, a batch of 30 T-72B3M tank upgrades with better combat capabilities will be delivered on Dec. 6, in order to rearm the 201st Russian military station in Tajikistan.

In October, Russia hosted large-scale joint military exercise with its allies at the Tajik-Afghan frontier after the United States withdrew troops and allies from Afghanistan.
