As it was unable to pay its recent repayments, the developer found itself in debt.  It looked unlikely that it met its $400 million offshore debt deadlineAccording to Reuters on Tuesday.

Kaisa halted trading in early November for nearly three weeksAfter receiving news about a late payment on a wealth-management product, it decided to cancel.

Last week however, the bondholders were not able to make an exchange offer. The bondholders may have the option to purchase new Kaisa bonds, which could then be exchanged with equity from some listed units. Analysts believe that Kaisa is more likely to default if it fails to make a deal.

Among Chinese developers, Kaisa is the second-largest issuer of U.S. dollar-denominated offshore high-yield bonds, according to French investment bank Natixis. EvergrandeThe world’s largest real estate developer is ranked first.

It would be the first time that the firm formally defaults if so, as it has managed to make the last few interest payments at the eleventh hour — within the grace period deadline.
