(Reuters) – A Michigan teenager was charged with murder in the worst school shooting incident in 2021. He answered his questions by videolink on Monday. His lawyers failed to convince the judge that he should be moved from the facility in which he is currently being held with adult guards.
Ethan Crumbley (age 15), blinked briefly behind his glasses while wearing a white mask over his face during an Oakland County criminal court procedural hearing. He was told by his attorneys that he would be best served in the adult jail of the county. But he remains isolated from the other inmates.
His attorneys also claimed that he was safe and not a risk to any other youths, so he should be detained in a youth facility.
Marc Keast from Oakland County was the assistant prosecutor and told Nancy Carniak that video evidence indicated that Crumbley was involved in the November 30 shooting which killed four students, seriously injured six others, and left a teacher at Oxford High School. Oxford High School is 30 miles (48 km), northwest of Detroit. Crumbley pleaded not guilty.
Keast claimed that Crumbley was being held as an adult, and therefore he cannot imagine Crumbley in a juvenile institution.
Crumbley would be held in contempt by the judge. Keast promised her that he would call jail officials in order to ensure Crumbley was not “in sight or sound” of anyone at Oakland County Jail.
Crumbley had been told by his lawyers that he could listen to adults while being detained in jail’s clinic.
Crumbley only spoke briefly at the hearing. He gave his name to the judge and said he understood all of the proceedings.
James Crumbley and Jennifer Crumbley are also charged with the November 30 murders. They allegedly gave their son a semi-automatic pistol as a Christmas gift and ignored warnings that he planned to attack the school.
Parents have pleaded guilty to the charges of involuntary murderer and are currently being held on $500,000 bail.
