(Reuters) – Alphabet, NASDAQ: Inc shuts down Sidewalk Labs. Sidewalk Labs founder and chief executives of the company that developed smart-city technology revealed to doctors that he could have amytrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Alphabet stated that the Google unit will assume control of Sidewalk Labs. This includes sensors for sending information regarding available parking spaces to driver applications and automating building heating and cooling to achieve maximum efficiency.

Sidewalk Labs was established by Dan Doctoroff, who is the ex-chief executive of Bloomberg LP’s financial data business. He received encouragement from Eric Schmidt, CEO at Google, and Larry Page in 2015. Their goal was to improve urban quality by decreasing housing costs, improving safety, and improving sustainability.

Sidewalk’s original plan was to develop a huge waterfront area in Toronto for the promotion of its technologies. Sidewalk dropped the plan last year due to concerns from community members about surveillance, other issues and rising costs.

Doctoroff stated in a blog that he believes he has ALS. Doctoroff said he was negative for ALS gene mutations. This had also been reported in his family.

Doctoroff stated that he plans to now focus his efforts on raising $250 Million for medical research. Target (NYSE:) ALS is a group he started.

Sidewalk’s parking technology Pebble, and Mesa, a low-cost energy tracking software are just two of the many projects Google plans to take over. The company has not shared a date for the transition, according to a spokesperson.

Doctoroff explained that Sidewalk Labs president of Urban Products Prem RAMaswami (both Google alumni) will lead the products. “The teams will execute their visions and continue serving customers, Doctoroff added.

Sidewalk announced that a new venture, Canopy Buildings, in the development of “mass timber construction”, was being spun off from Cityblock Health and Replica.
