WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Roger Stone, a long-time adviser to Donald Trump will use the Constitution’s protection against self-incrimination in a Friday interview with the Committee investigating the attack on January 6 on the U.S. Capitol. Stone’s lawyer stated on Thursday.
Grant Smith, Stone’s attorney, sent an e-mail to inform him that his client would appear before the House of Representatives on Friday for a closed-door hearing. However, he will not answer any questions. This invokes his Fifth Amendment rights.
The Fifth Amendment prevents anyone from being required to give to investigators information that may lead to their criminal prosecution.
The House Select Committee subpoenaed at least two other highly-profile witnesses. These were John Eastman, an ex-lawyer for Trump and Jeffrey Clark.
Stone was subpoenaed by the committee on Nov. 22 to give evidence about Stone’s appearances at proTrump rallies in Washington.
Stone’s security was provided by Oath Keepers members on Jan. 5th and Jan. 6th. Criminal charges have been filed against several Oath Keepers for the Jan. 6th breach of the Capitol.
Robert Mueller, the former Special Counsel charged with investigating Russian interference in 2016’s election, had previously indicted Stone. Stone was found guilty by the Washington federal jury of lying to Congress, obstruction and witness tampering.
Trump granted Stone pardon in December 2020. This lifted Stone’s criminal conviction.
In an attempt to block congressional formal certification of Trump’s electoral loss to Democrat Joe Biden, a crowd of Trump supporters stormed Capitol Square on January 6. This committee will be scrutinizing Trump’s behavior in relation to these events.
Over 700 individuals were charged for taking part in the Riot at the Capitol.
