Las Bambas says not mulling legal action for now as Peru blockade continues -Breaking

LIMA (Reuters), – MMG Ltd.’s Las Bambas Mine has decided not to take legal action against Peru for the moment due to a near month-long roadblockade, which forced the miner to cease operations. A company executive stated Monday.

Residents of Chumbivilcas, a province in the Chumbivilcas region, have been imposing a blockade since Nov. 20, complaining that they are not able to access the mining wealth and want more money and jobs for their area.

Peru ranks as the No. The world’s number 2 copper producer is Las Bambas, which accounts for 2.2% of the global copper supply.

Claudio Caceres, head of Las Bambas legal affairs said company representatives would attend the government-convened meeting with Chumbivilcas on Tuesday.

Caceres, a local radio station RPP said that “currently we are mainly committed in being able to resume a constructive and genuine dialogue. At the moment we have no intention of taking legal actions.”

According to OjoPublico, the leaders of Chumbivilcas’ farming communities decided to not attend the meeting.

Chinese-owned mining company, started its operations in 2016. It has been the focus of many protests and road blocks since then. Production was stopped indefinitely on Saturday.
