Blockchain Gaming and play-to-earn in a Golden Season Why?

The success of blockchain games this year was obvious, and it is not necessary to elaborate on the matter. Nobody believed at the outset that projects like Decentraland and The Sandbox would be able to gain entry into the top 100 cryptos.

It could, however, have been predicted by considering the development of these factors:

NFTs Are Evolving Like Pokémon

A lot of people are still unsure about their true purpose, despite the NFT boom that occurred at the beginning of this year. They looked more like expensive JPEGs that you could use to create a profile picture on social media than anything revolutionary. NFTs were a new phenomenon after the NFT boom, which demonstrated their importance in the context of the environment.

Let’s consider NFT through the prism of their initial purpose: collection. You have an attractive figurine that looks like a favourite character. The value of your figurine is not just the cost you paid, but also its ability to look great. It can be touched, used in board games and moved around. These collectibles also come in NFTs. However, their digital environment allows them to interact with other people.

Play-to-Earn Features Became Beneficial

Even though value can be relative, they have their own reasons. In terms of NFTs, their value shouldn’t be the factor of just being non-fungible tokens. Blockchain is just a technology that gives you the possibility to save value, it shouldn’t hold value itself.

NFTs have no value outside of the ecosystem, as stated above. A NFT from Enjin is, for instance, valuable as it can be used to support Enjin in in-game activities. Therefore, value comes from the environment and not vice versa.

However, it is the environment that has the responsibility to create value. In the traditional gaming industry, gameplay, visuals, and storyline are the main focus of a player’s enjoyment. The blockchain gaming industry has shifted the emphasis to earning tokens in the in-game economy, which can later be converted into real money.

Axie Infinity had a functioning economy that allowed the pioneer to launch the pendulum. Of course, the gameplay wasn’t ideal at that time but the uniqueness of the game’s economy let some people in the Philippines survive the pandemic crisis. The play-to earn concept was able to withstand harsh field conditions.

Metaverses received a Meta Boost

After Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement, projects such as Decentraland and The Sandbox received a second boost. Of course, Facebook’s Meta doesn’t have anything in common with NFTs (yet), but the name and the concept served their purpose.

Metaverses have non-fungible tokens that are often multifunctional. This adds more value to them. Metaverses have a higher chance of meeting the standard. Battle Racers is a game that can be played in multiple ways. It can be played on PCs, iOS/Android mobile phones and inside Decentraland. Even if the game goes down it still exists within Decentraland’s metaverse.

Why you should care

This being said, I believe that crypto games have entered their golden age. The natural evolution of blockchain technology and a series of amazing coincidences are helping them gain more value. The other side is that once people get used to playing-to earn features, their focus will change to highest quality gameplay and visuals. In the future, quality standards will increase exponentially. Therefore, only the most exceptional will prevail.
