As the country faces an unprecedented rise in new infections, President Joe Biden ordered 10 million more Covid-19 pills from Pfizer. This doubles the U.S. government’s purchases of the antiviral medicine.

In accordance with the order, the U.S. committed to purchasing at least 20 millions courses from Pfizer. White House claims that the Biden administration has accelerated delivery of the 10 million first treatment courses, moving them from September to June.

According to the White House, the manufacture of the pills takes time and that the U.S. will receive them once they are off the production line. According to the White House, the U.S. will support Pfizer in the manufacturing process with any resources including the Defense Production Act.

Biden plans to meet Tuesday afternoon with White House Covid-19 Response Team. He will give an update to the nation regarding his plan to defeat omicron in its current state, driving new infections and a rise in pandemics.

According to Johns Hopkins University data, the United States recorded over 1 million infections Monday. This record-breaking single-day number could partly be due to the fact that some states didn’t publish any new cases over the holiday weekend.

According to CNBC’s analysis of Hopkins data, however, the average seven-day number of infections rose nearly twice as fast as the week before.

The treatment Paxlovid by Pfizer was found to be 89% effective in the prevention of death or hospitalization due to Covid, in an analysis of over 2,000 adults at high risk.

Dec. saw the Food and Drug Administration approve the treatment for those aged 12 and over with moderate to severe Covid and who are most at risk of death or hospitalization. This treatment can only be obtained by prescription and should not exceed five days of use.

Paxlovid is three tablets, two nirmatrelvir tablet and one tablet of Ritonavir. Nirmatrelvir stops the replication of the virus, while ritonavir slows down the metabolism, which allows Pfizer’s drug to stay active longer in the body to combat the virus.

It could reduce strain on healthcare systems and keep people out of hospitals (especially those not vaccinated) as Covid cases increase.

According to data from the Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 98,000 Americans have been hospitalized using Covid-19 as of January 3, an increase of 32% over a week.
