Mobileye, Zeekr aim for self-driving car in China in 2024 -Breaking

(Reuters) – Intel Corp Mobileye, a company that provides autonomous driving services (NASDAQ:), announced Tuesday that it will partner with Zeekr (Geely Holding) to create in China the “first fully self-driving vehicle in the world” in 2024.

Two companies revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show Las Vegas that their car would have level 4 autonomy. That is, it will need a licensed driver and still have a steering column. However, it can now drive itself in many different situations. Mobileye will supply six “EyeQ 5” chips to the car, as well as road mapping data from Mobileye.

Intel is desperate for money to construct chip factories, and race to catch up to rivals such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, who have overtaken Intel’s position in the making of fastest chips. Last month, Intel announced that it would spin off a part Mobileye during an initial public offering. According to Reuters, Geely is a fast-growing Chinese automaker that has explored the possibility of making cars in Korea, which could then be shipped duty-free to the United States.

Mobileye also stated Tuesday that it was deepening its partnership with Ford Motor (NYSE.:) Co. According to the two companies, Ford will be using Mobileye’s Road-mapping Data System, which was compiled from all cars on the roads with Mobileye hardware. This data is used in Ford’s future “BlueCruise”, which permits hands-free driving under certain circumstances.

Mobileye announced that Volkswagen AG (OTC) would also use some of its mapping products for Volkswagen’s (DE:).

Mobileye’s next-generation flagship computer chip was also presented Tuesday by the company. The “EyeQ Ultra”, which will be called, is designed to run minimal electricity. This becomes more crucial as autonomous systems face competition with limited electric car battery capacities and drive trains. According to the company, prototypes will be available next year. The chips are expected to become automotive-ready in 2025.
