REUTERS/Mike Blake(Reuters) – Wednesday’s criticism by the American Medical Association (AMA), regarding the United States government’s quarantine and isolation guidelines, was made on Wednesday. The AMA stated that the guidance was confusing and could have a negative impact on the spread of COVID-19.
However, Tuesday’s U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), did not recommend a fast antigen test for anyone seeking to get rid of their COVID-19 isolation. This would have been five days.
For one to be considered for isolation, they should require a negative result. According to the AMA, re-emerging without being able to determine one’s current status could lead further transmission.
The CDC reduced last week the suggested isolation time for patients with asymptomatic covid to 5 days, and Tuesday endorsed that decision by stating that a review 113 studies from 17 different countries had shown that the majority of transmission takes place early in the course.
According to the AMA, physicians worry that such recommendations could put patients at greater risk and further overload the healthcare system.
Omicron, a variant of coronavirus that has rapidly spread across America, led to an increase in hospitalizations as well as a scarcity of testing kits.
The AMA urged America to increase production and distribute COVID-19 testing. It also stated that a lack of COVID-19 test results does not mean the U.S. should abandon a requirement for testing to end a current shortened isolation.
