(Reuters) – The U.S. oilfield services and equipment sector added 7,450 jobs in December, even as overall hiring in the United States slowed, according to a report released on Monday by the Energy Workforce & Technology Council, an industry trade group.

According to the report, the sector has recovered 62,289 job opportunities since it lost a maximum of 109,000 jobs in February 2021 due to the coronavirus virus pandemic. According to the Council, pandemic-related wage losses have cost about $5.6 trillion annually.

U.S. crude oil prices have risen by about half a year to $78.59 per barrel, as of Monday. According to Baker Hughes data, 588 oil and gas drilling rigs were active in the week ending Jan. 7. This is the most since April 2020.

According to the Council, Texas is the most oil-producing state in America. It has created nearly 22,000 new jobs on the oilfields over the last year. Louisiana followed with 3,757 new jobs, bringing its total employment up to 51,000.
