(Reuters) – The United States imposed sanctions Monday on six Nicaraguan officials as part of a coordinated effort with the European Union. This was in response to President Daniel Ortega being inaugurated following an election Washington denounced as rigged.

According to the U.S. Treasury Department, sanctions were imposed on Nicaraguan officials for state-related violence and disinformation. The statement also named the minister in defense.

Joe Biden, the American President in November attacked Ortega calling Nicaragua’s Presidential Election a “pantomime”, as Ortega was a former Marxist guerrilla fighter and Cold War foe of the United States. He won election for a fourth term following the imprisonments of political rivals.

According to Brian Nelson, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, “The Ortega Murillo regime continues its subjugation and control of democracy through the effectuating of sham election, silence peaceful opposition and keeping hundreds of people in political prison,” the statement said.

The United States and its partners sent a clear message that they stand by the Nicaraguan people’s demands for immediate freedom of political prisoners and the return to democracy.

Officials of the Nicaraguan Institute of Telecommunications and Mail, as well as the government-owned Nicaraguan Mining Company were also targets of the Treasury’s action.
