(Reuters] – The pay negotiations between Kroger (NYSE) King Soopers grocery and union representation of more than 8700 workers failed. It is now the time for a three-week strike to be started by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7.

Kim Cordova of the Union stated that King Soopers hadn’t yet given the information necessary for them to review their proposal in an updated livestreamed via Facebook (NASDAQ:).

Only one proposal was made during three days of negotiations. Representatives from the union asked for them to reconsider. Liz Wesley is a Colorado Springs store manager who worked 17 years at the grocery chain.

Wesley claimed that the company isn’t taking our suggestions seriously. “We would like a better contract.”

King Soopers Colorado has over 100 locations and is the largest grocery chain in Colorado. King Soopers is the No.1 grocery chain according to market share. The pandemic has seen its sales rise, and shares in Kroger reached a new record last week.

King Soopers last month offered $145million in new wages for the next four-years, increasing over 75% to over $18 an associates’ hourly wage and more than $20 for over 50%.

Following the rejection of the proposal by the union, $148 Million in signing bonuses and wages was added to the contract. This will be paid over three years.

A day prior to the end of the Denver Metropolitan, Broomfield and Parker and Boulder contract, the union warned that there would be a strike on Wednesday morning at 5 a.m.

King Soopers asked for federal mediation, but Cordova refused to help him because “at this stage in the process, adding another presence will not be productive”.

On Monday, however, the company stated that unfair practices charges had been filed against the union because it refused to enter into a good-faith bargaining agreement.

The union filed the lawsuit last month against the grocery store for using third-party workers to hire employees. Wages starting at $16 an hour are paid by staffing companies, which is more than many King Soopers workers.

According to the company, the union had not indicated when they would return to the negotiations process.
