U.S. maker of electric vehicles TeslaThe highest number of China-made cars sold in December since the company began manufacturing in Shanghai in 2019 was 70,847, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association on Tuesday.

Tesla’s December Sales, including 245 Export orders, was almost triple that of the previous year, 34% better than November’s.

According to Reuters calculations, Tesla also saw an increase in sales of Chinese-made vehicles last year, to at least 473 078, according to CPCA data. CPCA had not published figures prior to April for Tesla’s China car exports.

It accounts for approximately half the 936,000 cars that America’s automaker sold globally in 2013.

The Tesla factory in Shanghai, China, began delivering cars at the end 2019 and produces electric Model 3 sedans as well as Model Y sports-utility vehicles. It also sells vehicles on domestic and international markets including Japan and Germany.

Automaker has managed to overcome supply chain problems experienced by competitors to achieve record quarterly deliveries. In October, the company reported that its third quarter results exceeded expectations and revealed in its third quarter results, that Shanghai’s annual production could exceed 450,000 units.

Tu Le (based in Beijing, China) is the managing director of Sino Auto Insights. He said that December’s numbers show that Tesla continues to be a strong brand and it also was operationally impressive, given the Shanghai plant could produce around 42,000 cars per month.
