REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/File PhotoMEXICO CITY, (Reuters) – Mexico’s government stated Wednesday that it will closely monitor excessive market concentration in the U.S. banking system. Citigroup (NYSE:) Sells Mexico’s consumer banking businesses. The company expects that the sale will generate lots of buyer interest.
According to the Finance Ministry, Mexico’s departure of a major consumer bank raised delicate issues that need attention. The ministry will also be focusing its strict scrutiny on the financial and regulatory agencies. This includes a crucial issue about concentration.
According to the ministry, Jane Fraser, Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup, “came to Mexico personally to explain this decision and stress that the bank will continue its wholesale corporate banking activities within our country which will require new investments.”
Unnamed Mexican officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to confirm that Fraser arrived in Mexico 10 days ago.
Citigroup has not yet responded to my request for comment.
Adan Augusto Lopez, the Mexican Interior Minister, stated that the government does not intend to purchase Citibanamex assets. Instead, it will be focusing on other projects including large public works.
Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas claimed Tuesday that he has asked his team to investigate the possibility for acquiring Citigroup Mexico assets. Lopez stated however, that the government does not provide any official information regarding potential buyers.
Lopez noted that these assets make up a large part of Mexican banking infrastructure and he anticipates robust interest.
Lopez stated that there were “certainly to be many business groups interested to put forward a buy offer.” Lopez was acting as President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador during the conference because of the latter’s COVID-19 infection.
