WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The chief executives of major U.S. passenger and cargo carriers on Monday warned of an impending “catastrophic” aviation crisis Wednesday when AT&T (NYSE:) and Verizon (NYSE:) are set to deploy new 5G service.

The chief executives of American Airlines (NASDAQ;), Delta Air Lines(NYSE:), United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and other companies wrote to the White House’s Transportation Department, Federal Aviation Administration and Federal Communications Commission, “If our major hubs don’t fly, then the vast majority (traveling and shipping public) will be essentially grounded.” It means there will be more than 1,100 flights each day, and over 100,000 passengers on a day similar to yesterday.

These could include cancellations, diversions and delays.

The letter was signed by UPS Airlines and JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ) as well FedEx Express (NYSE) Express. “To be blunt, the nation’s commerce will grind to a halt.”
