Walmart will create NFTs to protect Meta Intrusion
  • Walmart (NYSE: ) has filed patent applications to gain entry to the Metaverse.
  • Seven patents were filed by the company. The company plans to develop its own crypto and NFTs.
  • This patent application covers plans for producing and selling virtual goods, trademark company logos and names in AR and VR.

Walmart Inc. is a multinational retailer and one of the most prominent companies in the Metaverse arms racing. The retailer actually filed seven patents at the US Patent and Trademark Office on December 30th 2021. But, it remained overlooked until CNBC published a report on January 16, in which Walmart’s plan has come into full view.

In particular, the company intends to develop its own NFT collection. Three of seven patents are covered by Wallmart Connect (the advertising division)

The application included several plans for creating and selling virtual goods like electronics, toys and home decors. The application mentioned the digital token, digital currency and options to purchase and sell NFTs.

A separate application proposes to trademark Walmart’s logo and brand in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (VR). It is possible to offer physical training services in VR or AR.

All these plans are part of Walmart’s interest to enter the metaverse. The retail giant also posted an August 2021 job opening for a lead in digital currencies and crypto products as part of its digital currency strategy.

The job posting was removed, however, it’s not clear if the position has been filled.

Walmart also partnered with Coinme, a crypto ATM provider Coinstar in October 2021 to place 200 ATMs at its US stores. In 2018, Walmart began using blockchain technology in supply chain management, smart appliances and customer markets.

In the meantime, here’s a report from Morgan Stanley According to the NYSE, metaverse might offer additional earnings opportunities for retailers of $8 trillion.

Digital Commerce 360 reported that Walmart had reached $11.1 billion sales in its third quarter 2021. Walmart has a market capitalization close to $406 billion and is considered the biggest private employer in America. Walmart operates grocery and discount department stores as well as many hypermarkets.
