European new car sales down 1.5% in 2021

REUTERS/Neil Hall/File PhotoBERLIN, (Reuters) – The new registrations of cars in Europe decreased 1.5% in 2021, which is even lower than the record-breaking 2020 sales figure, data from industry sources showed Tuesday.
The global shortage of semiconductors, as well as other supply chain issues, have affected worldwide deliveries. Many carmakers are now stuck with half-finished goods that they cannot meet the demand.
German sales were the worst among all major EU markets. However, ACEA data shows that Germany saw a 10.1% drop in its annual sales, while France, Spain, and Italy had marginal growth.
Dec. saw a decrease of 21.7% in new vehicle registrations in Europe, Britain, and European Free Trade Association (EFTA). This was the sixth consecutive month with declines.
