“Thich Nhat Hanh will be remembered as arguably one of the most influential and prominent religious leaders in the world,” Chargé d’Affaires Marie C. Damour of U.S. Mission to Vietnam said in a statement.

She stated that her father’s teachings and his literary works will continue to be a legacy for future generations. In particular, his lessons on how mindfulness can be integrated into everyday life have been a blessing in the lives of many Americans.

Thich Nhat Hanh shared in gentle, yet strong tones the importance of walking as though you were kissing the Earth with your feet.

In 2014, he was struck by a stroke and became speechless. He then returned to Vietnam, where he will spend his final days. Hue is the capital of Hue and the place where he was born.

A pioneer in Buddhism, he founded “Plum Village,” a monastery in France. He spoke frequently about mindfulness to his followers and the corporate world.

Thich Nhat Hânh was a seven-language speaker who lectured at Columbia and Princeton universities in the United States during the 1960s. His 1963 return to Vietnam was part of a Buddhist movement against the U.S. Vietnam War. This opposition included self-immolation demonstrations by several monks.

He wrote that he saw anti-communists and communists both killing and destroying one another because they believed they were the only ones who knew all. This was in 1975.

“My voice was drowned by bombs, mortars, and shouting.”

‘LIKE a PINE TREE’

He met Martin Luther King in 1960s Vietnam War, and he convinced him to oppose the war.

Thich Nhat Hongh was called by King “an apostle to peace and nonviolence” and he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

King stated in his nomination letter that he did not know of any person more deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize other than the gentle Buddhist monk of Vietnam.

The South Vietnamese government prohibited Thich Nhat Hanh’s return to South Vietnam after he was invited by King George VI of the United States a year prior.

Haenim Sunim, a fellow monk, once served as Thich Nhat Hanh’s translator on a South Korean trip. He said that the Zen master was loving, calm, and attentive.

Haemin sunim, a Haemin Sunim reporter for Reuters said: “He was like a huge pine tree that allowed many people to relax under his branches with his amazing teachings about mindfulness and compassion.”

“He was one the most incredible people I’ve ever met.”

As the world struggles to recover from the coronavirus epidemic that claimed over one million lives and disrupted daily life, Thich Nhat Hanh’s work and his promotion of meditation and mindfulness have gained a renewed interest.

Thich Nhat Hanh said that hope is essential because it makes the current moment easier to bear. If we are positive that tomorrow will bring us joy, then we can endure hardship today.

You can let go of the hope and just be present. The joy is all around you.
