MEXICO CITY (Reuters – Authorities said that two Canadians had died from gunshot wounds in Mexico following a violent argument at a resort close to Cancun, Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
Mexican officials cited information from Canadian authorities as indicating that both of the guests to the upscale resort at Quintana Roo State’s Riviera Maya had criminal convictions.
Mexican police want to find another gunman believed to be responsible for the shotgun shots. This person is known to have a lengthy criminal record in Canada.
Lucio Hernandez of Quintana Roo, Quintana Roo’s head for public security stated that a gun had been fired during “an argument among Hotel Guests” at Hotel Xcaret.
Hernandez reported that three victims were hurt and had to be taken to hospital. Hernandez posted photographs of the suspect, which showed a black-faced man wearing a grey tracksuit and a mask while holding a gun against green landscaping.
Xcaret stated that it appeared the attack was “targeted” and is helping those affected. In a statement, it stated that Hotel Xcaret deeply regretted what had happened this afternoon.
According to the Canadian government, it is in contact with Mexican authorities but could not give more information due to privacy concerns.
