MILAN (Reuters – Former Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi was admitted to a Milan hospital on Sunday for routine checkups. This came a day after Berlusconi, 85, decided not run for the presidency.
Berlusconi is a former four-time prime minister of Italy. He had major heart surgery in 2016, and also has had prostate cancer. After contracting COVID-19, Berlusconi has had to be admitted multiple times to the hospital in recent years.
Alberto Zangrillo stated in a statement, that Berlusconi is undergoing lengthy-scheduled testing in the hospital.
Berlusconi spokesperson said Saturday that he was against the idea of running for President before the Monday parliamentary vote. Reuters did not reach him for comment.
Zangrillo stated that Berlusconi was admitted at the San Raffaele Hospital on Sunday after Berlusconi announced his decision to withdraw from the presidential race.
Two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters that he’d been admitted to hospital since Thursday.
Italy’s rightist coalition requested Berlusconi to run. But, he was unlikely to win due to the difficulties in obtaining broad support from more than 1000 legislators and regional delegate.
