MELBOURNE (Reuters). – The Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley refuted the reports Novak Djokovic was going to sue Tennis Australia for deportation. Tiley said that he believes the world number one will return to the Grand Slam next year.
After a Federal Court rejected his request to remain in Australia to participate at the Australian Open, Djokovic was denied the chance to defend the title that he won nine times.
There have been reports that Djokovic had plans to sue Tennis Australia. Tiley, however, denied this in an interview with ABC.
Tiley said “No” when he was asked about legal action.
We are currently in the position to focus our attention on an event and will deliver another great event.
Tiley is also confident that Djokovic will be able to return home, even though he may face a ban of three years from traveling into Australia as a consequence.
When asked whether the Grand Slam 20 winner would return next year, he replied “Yes”.
“Obviously, he has to make it this year. However, that will not be his intent.
“At the end, he is the world’s number one player and he loves the Australian Open.”
Tiley blamed Djokovic for his expulsion from Australia because of miscommunications with the federal government.
He stated, “It had been an incredibly difficult environment.”
“One or two pieces of communication does not define the amount of communication that went on to the event.
“We knew it was going to be a challenging period, which is why we had a lot more contradiction and complexity in information.”
