UK says Russia is seeking to replace the Ukraine government with pro-Moscow leaders

[ad_1]

According to the British government, Russia was accused of wanting to take over Ukraine’s government.

Murayev leads the pro-Russian pro-Russian party Nashi. This small proverbial party currently holds no seats in Ukraine’s Parliament.

Britain’s Foreign Office identified several Ukrainian politicians as having links to Russian intelligence agencies.

The UK isn’t sure what Russia may use to establish a Kyiv-based friendly government.

Without providing any evidence, the U.K. government claimed that it was based on intelligence assessments. The claim is made amid an ongoing battle between Moscow, the West and Russia over Russia’s intentions on Ukraine.

Liz Truss, Foreign Secretary of the United States said that the data “shines light on Russia’s activity to subvert Ukraine” and provides insight into Kremlin thought.

Truss encouraged Russia to “de-escalate”, stop its attacks and disinformation campaigns, and continue a course of diplomacy” and reiterated Britain’s belief that “any Russian military invasion into Ukraine would constitute a major strategic mistake and incur severe costs.”

Britain sent antitank weapons to Ukraine to boost its defenses against an attack by Russia.

In the midst of diplomatic efforts to ease the crisis, U.K. defense secretary Ben Wallace will be meeting Sergei Shoigu from Russia for talks in Moscow. The meeting will be held in Moscow and is expected to mark the beginning of bilateral U.K-Russian defense talks.

Recent months have seen the U.S. launch an aggressive campaign against any Russian invasion of Ukraine. The White House described the U.K. government’s assessment as “deeply worrying” and indicated that the White House stands by the legitimately elected Ukrainian government.

Emily Horne spoke out on behalf of the National Security Council, saying that this kind of plotting was deeply troubling. “The Ukrainian people have the sovereign right to determine their own future, and we stand with our democratically-elected partners in Ukraine.”

Biden was at Camp David, Washington’s presidential retreat on Saturday when the assessment was made. He was chatting with senior members of his national security team to discuss the Ukraine situation.

A further development was that of the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania who plan to send U.S. made anti-tank/anti-aircraft missiles (ATM) to Ukraine. The move is fully supported by USA amid Russia’s increasing tensions.

In a joint statement, the defense ministers from all three Baltic countries stated that they were united in their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Antony Blinken, U.S. Secretary-of-State, tweeted that Washington praised NATO countries and ex Soviet republics for their support of Ukraine.

Blinken added that “I authorized and expedited” the transfer of defence equipment from @NATO Allies Estonia Latvia Lithuania was made to Ukraine for strengthening its defense against Russia’s unprovoked, irresponsible aggression.

Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, earlier this week described Ukraine’s West-supplied arms as very dangerous. He also stated that the shipment “does nothing to lower tensions.”

Russia and Ukraine have been surrounded by thousands of soldiers from Moscow, raising fears of an invading force. The West has rejected Moscow’s main demands — promises from NATO that Ukraine will never be added as a member, that no alliance weapons will be deployed near Russian borders, and that it will pull back its forces from Central and Eastern Europe.

The meeting between Sergey Lavrov and Blinken on Friday ended without any breakthrough. In light of uncertain security, the U.S. State Department considered a variety of options to secure the U.S. Ambassador in Kyiv (and its staff) and to minimize its diplomatic presence.

In a statement, the defense ministers from the Baltic countries stated that Estonia would supply Javelin anti tank weapons to Kyiv while Latvia and Lithuania sent Stinger anti aircraft missiles to help strengthen Kyiv’s military defence capabilities. The exact date of the equipment and weapons being sent to Ukraine was not immediately known.

Ukraine today is leading the fight to separate Europe from Russia in the war on terror. Let´s face it, the war in Ukraine is ongoing and it is important to support Ukraine in every way we can so that they can resist the aggressor,” Estonian Defense Minister Kalle Laanet said.

Estonia seeks Germany’s consent to allow the transfer of Soviet-made howitzers that once belonged East Germany to Ukraine. Estonia purchased the Finnish howitzers, which were then bought from Germany’s military surplus stock in the 1990s.

Friday’s announcement by Germany was that the government of Estonia was currently considering whether to transfer the howitzers from Estonia to Ukraine. However, it did not provide any timeframe for making a decision. Berlin stated that it would coordinate with Finland on the matter, having received an identical approval request from Estonia.

Berlin regularly demands an explanation when German-sold arms are sent to third countries. However, media reports have suggested that Estonian Chancellor Olaf Scholz might block Estonia’s transfer to Kyiv of German-sold weapons. These claims highlight divisions in West’s response towards the Ukraine crisis.

Dmytro Kuleba (Ukraine’s Foreign Minister) claimed that Germany did not provide sufficient support to Ukraine on Saturday

Kuleba stated in a tweet that Kuleba’s comments on the weapons transfer and those made by Annalena Bock, German Foreign Minister, expressing doubt about Russia being cut off from SWIFT were “not consistent with the level of our relationships and the current security situations.”

On Saturday, also, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called the German Ambassador to object to a video that was recently circulated in which the German naval chief said that Ukraine will not be able to regain the Crimean Peninsula which Russia annexed last year and that Russian President Vladimir Putin deserves “respect.”

Vice admiral Kay-Achim Schoenbach’s comments caused consternation, which was quickly rebutted in Berlin. The German navy chief, who was adamant that his inconsiderate statements had caused further harm to India, had resigned by Saturday night.

U.S. State Department warns Americans not to travel to Ukraine because of the coronavirus epidemic, but also advises them to consider rethinking their plans to go there in light of possible Russian aggression.

Since Tuesday’s announcement by the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv that it will hold a virtual meeting to discuss the security situation in Ukraine with U.S. citizens, speculation has grown about an imminent U.S. diplomatic presence.

Officials said that while discussions have been ongoing for some time on this matter, Blinken reviewed the plans with the security team of the Embassy in Kyiv when he visited the city on Wednesday.

They stressed that they had not yet made any decisions, and no evacuation plan is being contemplated. According to them, one possibility is to have American family members evacuate while government employees can leave voluntarily.
