  • A supercomputer is needed to help build the Metaverse.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has shown off its AI supercomputer and claims for it to already be one of the fastest in the world. The supercomputer, named Research Supercluster (RSC), is a major step in building the Metaverse.

RSC is expected to be fully operational by the middle 2022. Meta predicts it will become the world’s fastest supercomputer after its completion.

Meta shared details on RSC via a blog posting dated January 24. The company stated that RSC’s purpose is to assist Meta’s AI researchers in building newer and better AI models. The supercomputer can work in hundreds of languages and seamlessly analyse images, text, video and audio, as well as develop AR tools.

Above all, the tech conglomerate’s goal is to help researchers develop advanced AI for computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing.

RSC can help us develop entirely new AI systems. These can be used to power speech translations in real time for large groups of people speaking different languages. They can then seamlessly collaborate on projects, or even play AR games together.

In a Facebook post (NASDAQ: 25 Jan), CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the building of the metaverse would require immense computing power. RSC will enable AI models to understand thousands of languages and learn from billions of other examples.

Metaverse is a virtual world where people can interact with each other using virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality(AR) technology. People often refer to the Metaverse, or the next generation of the internet.
