NEW YORK (Reuters), Thousands of New York City Police officers lined Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue to remember a colleague who was fatally shot while responding to a domestic abuse call last week.

Blue uniformed officers with white gloves carried Jason Rivera’s flag-draped coffin into the iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan. This was one of the four New York City police officers who were shot in the last week.

Rivera’s widow Dominique Luzuriaga stated that her husband was the only one she loved. His fellow officers consoled him and then wiped away their tears.

It was unbelievable that you would leave me. Luzuriaga broke down, cracking her voice in an eulogy, “Seeing you wrapped up in sheets in hospital, and not being able to hear when you were talking, broken me.” “I’m not alone, even though I had thousands of brothers and sisters in blue.

Rivera and Wilbert Mora (27), were responding to Jan. 21 Harlem disturbances in which a female claimed she was in a brawl with one her sons.

Rivera and Mora were shot in the narrow corridor by the adult son of the victim shortly after they arrived on the scene. LaShawn McNeill, 47, was then killed by the rookie officer. McNeil, as well as Mora, both succumbed to their injuries in this week’s shooting.

Eric Adams, the Mayor of New York, took office in this month. He is also a former Police Captain. Adams pledged to bring about policies that would quickly stop the violence.

Adams spoke at Rivera’s funeral and said that Rivera’s bravery had helped to make public safety possible in the city.

He can hear us even from far away. Adams said that Adams heard our voices, heard our prayers and hoped for our success. “We, as citizens, states, and nations, thank Jason.”
