PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) -Gunmen killed a Christian priest and wounded another as the clerics drove home from church in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar on Sunday, police said.
Police added that Pastor William Siraj was killed instantly by two attackers riding a motorcycle.
The shooting occurred in the same city that saw scores die in the 2013 twin suicide bombings outside of a church. This attack was one of the most devastating on Pakistan’s Christian minorities.
Azad Marsh, the Church of Pakistan’s senior bishop, has condemned the attack. He tweeted, “We demand justice, protection, and respect for Christians from Pakistan’s Government.”
In Pakistan, the northwestern regions bordering Afghanistan are seeing a surge in militant attacks against security forces. Many of these were claimed by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. (TTP) is a group that associates itself to the Afghan Taliban.
The footage was captured by TV cameras and showed Siraj being taken from his vehicle. As they cried, mourners hugged and sobbed.
The Reverend Patrick Naem, Pastor Siraj’s co-worker, was named by Bishop Azad. He is currently being treated for injuries and out of danger.
Both were priests of the Diocese of Peshawar, Church of Pakistan. This union of protestant churches includes the Methodists and Anglicans is said to have been founded by Bishop Azad.
