REUTERS/Ali KharaWASHINGTON, (Reuters) – A U.N. document seen by Reuters claims that the Taliban and its allies have murdered scores of Afghan security forces members and officials since the U.S. pullout.
U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ report to the U.N. Security Council paints a picture of worsening living conditions for Afghanistan’s 39 million people despite an end of combat with the Taliban’s takeover in August.
Guterres declared that an entire system of economics and society is in danger.
This latest report comes after a string of warnings by U.N. Chiefs in recent months about humanitarian and economic crises. They accelerated following the Taliban’s capture of Kabul, the last U.S.-led military base. In addition to cutting critical international financial aid, the U.N. has also warned that there could be more.
Guterres recommended that the Council approve the restructuring of U.N. missions to resolve the problem, and the creation of a new unit for monitoring human rights.
According to the U.N. Mission, “continued to receive credible allegations of killings or enforced disappearances as well other violations” against ex-officials, security forces members, and those who were part of the U.S. led international military contingent, despite an amnesty by the Taliban.
The mission has determined as credible reports that more than 100 of those individuals have been killed – more than two-thirds of them allegedly by the Taliban or their affiliates – since Aug. 15, it said.
According to the report, there are also credible claims of extrajudicial executions of at most 50 individuals who were suspected to be members of the Islamic State militant organization’s local branch.
It stated that “Human Rights Defenders and Media Workers continue to be under attack, intimidation and harassment, arbitrary arrest, ill treatment and killings.”
