Police said Tuesday that two suspects were detained after a shooting at a Minneapolis school for special-needs students. One student died and the other was badly injured. Another handgun was recovered.

The authorities did not provide any information on the events surrounding the massacre and refused to answer reporters following the news conference.

According to Jay Henthorne, chief of police, the victims were shot to death on the sidewalk next to the South Education Center’s front door in Richfield (Minnesota), which is a suburb of Minneapolis.

Both victims were students and they were both taken to a local hospital where the one victim died from his injuries while the other was in critical condition. Henthorne stated that Henthorne confirmed this.

Minneapolis Star-Tribune cited friends and relatives to identify the victim as Jahmari, 15, who lived with his grandmother. Rice was a former football coach who said Tuesday was Rice’s first day at South Education Center.

Henthorne reported that after the shooting the suspects ran quickly, but didn’t give any further details on the number of assailants involved or what the motive was.

According to the chief, police conducted a thorough search of the school’s grounds and determined that there wasn’t any other threat.

Later, the police department issued an online statement stating that two suspects were taken into custody in relation to the shooting and that a pistol had been seized. In addition, search warrants were served on two Minneapolis addresses.

Other than to confirm that there were no other suspects being sought, police didn’t give any more details.

Sandra Lewandowsky (superintendent for the Richfield School District) said that about 200 children attend Richfield’s school center for special education programs. They range in age between pre-kindergarten and 21.

WCCO television reported that September was the month school was put under lockdown. WCCO stated that this student was taken into police custody.
