REUTERS/Ann Wang(Reuters) – A Myanmar military court delayed the hearing on the case against Aung San Suu Kyi. A source familiar with the proceedings stated that this happened after the media claimed the ousted leader was not feeling well.
Suu Kyi is due in court for Thursday and Friday hearings about corruption related to the leasing or purchase of helicopters while she was in office.
Radio Free Asia, U.S. funded radio station reported Suu Kyi allowed to miss hearings because of dizziness and nausea.
A source familiar with the proceedings told me that Thursday’s hearing was delayed, but Friday’s wasn’t, and Suu Kyi attended it.
According to a source, Suu Kyi was in good health on Friday. The next hearing will be held on February 11.
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Suu Kyi (76) is being tried in 13 cases. These cases carry combined sentences of 150 years imprisonment.
Already, she was sentenced to six years imprisonment in another case, which has been derided in Western countries, human rights groups, and her supporters as a joke.
According to state media, a fresh bribery case was brought against Suu Cyi. It alleges that she received $550,000 in donations from a businessman.
Suu Kyi will also be in court on February 14th to begin an election fraud trial. She was charged with influencing the 2020 elections in order to gain a second term.
Suu Kyi had previously denied all charges. The lawyers for Suu Kyi were barred from discussing her case.
The junta overthrew Suu Kyi’s government by a coup in February. A spokesperson for that group did not return a request to comment. According to the military government, Suu Kyi will be given due process by an impartial court.
This story incorrectly states that Thursday’s hearing had been postponed, and the hearing took place on Friday.
