WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – A former member of the National Guard who was in Iraq during the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol received a six month sentence.

U.S. District Court Amy Berman Jackson, District of Columbia, imposed the sentence on Mark Leffingwell of Seattle. He pleaded guilty a felony attack charge.

Jackson was asked by the prosecution to give Leffingwell (52) a longer sentence, 27 months, in prison. The judge said that she would impose a shorter sentence due to Leffingwell’s remorseful and non-criminal history.

Jackson was one of many federal judges from the District of Columbia that have attacked the Jan. 6, riot and called it “the definition of Tyranny” at Thursday’s hearing.

“It is not legitimate political discourse to descend on the nation’s Capitol on behalf of a disappointed former president and disrupt the electoral process,” Jackson said, an apparent reference to a Republican Party resolution https://www.reuters.com/world/us/loyal-trump-republican-party-moves-censure-us-reps-cheney-kinzinger-2022-02-04 that used the term to criticize the congressional investigation into the Jan. 6 attack.

Leffingwell stated that she was embarrassed and ashamed about herself during the hearing. “I wish that I could have the courage to go back and prevent it from happening.”

Last month, the Justice Department reported that over 225 people were accused of assaulting, resisting or impeding officials or employees of government during the Jan. 6, attack.

The Justice Department stated that approximately 140 police officers were attacked on the same day.

In the wake of the attack, four officers committed suicide.
