BEIJING (Reuters] – Kamila Valieva, a figure skating star who had previously failed a drug screen, won a silver medal. Olympic officials are going to fight Russia’s refusal to permit her to participate at the Winter Games.

As the International Olympic Committee (IOC), tries to put an end to Russian doping, the 15-year old’s future at the Games and gold medal are now in doubt.

Due to sanctions against Russia, Russian athletes will not be able to compete in the Beijing Games.

Russia acknowledged its shortcomings in anti-doping regulations implementation, but denied running any state-sponsored doping program.

One of the most memorable moments of Beijing Games was when Valieva landed quadruple jumps for a woman in Olympic competition.

The ITA made it clear that her Olympic dream was ruined when she revealed to the public that she tested positive in a urine test for banned angina drugs at St Petersburg’s national championships.

Her sample was confirmed positive by the Stockholm testing lab, Sweden on February 8. This came just one day after her quadruple leaps won her the Gold Medal for the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).

The reason for the delay in receiving her results was not immediately apparent. However, this allowed her to travel from London to participate in the first of her events.

According to the IOC, the case was handled initially by the Russian authorities before being transferred to the World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited lab.

WADA did not respond to Reuters’ Friday inquiries. Reuters inquires were not answered by the Russian drug testing agency.

PROVISIONAL SUPPORTION

Following the February 8th result, the Russian antidoping agency placed Valieva under a provisional suspension. After the Feb 8 result, Valieva appealed and was granted a temporary suspension. Russians didn’t make public the reasons for lifting her ban.

The IOC is now asking the Court of Arbitration for Sport if it can overturn Russia’s decision to permit her to participate.

Mark Adams, IOC spokesperson said that the organization has a “100 percent” policy against doping during a press conference held on Friday.

Adams claimed that Valieva will be competing again Tuesday at the women’s solos and the IOC requested that this decision be made.

A doping cloud has hovered over Valieva, the Russian teenage athlete and the Olympics for many days. After days of delays, the medal ceremony was canceled for the team event. Russian media reported first that Valieva had been positive for doping.

Valieva had practiced on Thursday at the Capital Indoor Stadium, and took Friday to the rink to continue practicing.

The ROC has another slot for female figure skaters on Friday at 1305 (0305GMT). This training session is free.

Adam stated that Adam needed to speed up the process for all parties.
