PHOENIX (Reuters – One suspect was shot to death at a Phoenix house and a victim in critical condition. Five police officers received non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital.

The infant and an adult man were also taken from the residence. The situation escalated when the suspect locked himself inside the house, prompting police to call the SWAT team of the Phoenix Police Department.

Police secured the location and found the suspect dead. Authorities say that nine officers suffered bullet-related injuries and were all left with non-life-threatening injuries. Five officers were taken to hospital. Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Wilkins stated that four of the five were in recovery and that one was on his way to recovery.

“This is senseless, it doesn’t need to happen, and it continues to happen over and over again,” Williams said in a press conference outside a Phoenix hospital.

After receiving an emergency call about a shot woman, police arrived on the scene at around 2:15 AM local time. Sergeant Andy Williams stated that the suspect had invited officers to enter the house, and when one officer came in, the suspect fired multiple shots.

According to police, a man was later seen leaving the house carrying an infant which he had placed on the ground. He was then taken into custody.

Other officers attempted to save the child but were hit by more gunfire. According to police statements, the suspect locked himself inside and barricaded his way out.

According to police, the infant was uninjured.

According to police, the suspect and the woman are thought to have once been in a relationship. However, the child is assumed to be theirs.

In a tweet, Governor Doug Ducey stated that his office was working closely with local authorities. He also asked for prayers to help the officers who were hurt.
