U.S. to halt Mexican avocado imports ‘as long as necessary’ to ensure worker safety -Breaking

WASHINGTON/MEXICO CITY -U.S. Imports of Mexican Avocado Harvests New will be Suspended for “as Long as Necessary” in order to protect U.S. Inspectors, who were verbally threatened by Mexicans in western Michoacan State.
Another source of tension in trade between Washington and Mexico City is the suspension of export inspections by USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
Agency stated that avocados from the United States must all be inspected. Avocados approved after February 11, however, can still be exported.
USDA claimed that suspensions were ordered due to a verbal threat (security incident) regarding employees. It will continue in force for as long necessary to safeguard the safety and security of APHIS employees in Mexico.
Details of the incident are not yet known. The only state that can export avocados to the United States from Michoacan in Mexico, Michoacan is Mexico’s largest avocado producer. It has had security problems for years due to drug gang connections.
‘POLITICAL ATTITUDE’
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the Mexican president, stated Monday that authorities were looking into the U.S. decision. He suggested there might be political motives for the suspension.
Lopez Obrador stated that the suspension was likely influenced by people who have something to gain, but he did not elaborate.
He stated, “The truth of the matter is that there is always an economic and a commercial interest behind them.” Or there could be a political outlook.
Recent complaints by the Biden administration have been filed against Mexico’s enforcement of workers rights under the U.S.-Mexico Canada Agreement. Additionally, the United States expressed concern about US government regulation in its telecoms sector and energy sector.
Lopez Obrador mentioned a recent U.S. decision to pursue talks with Mexico regarding its environmental obligations under the North American Trade Agreement, including protecting endangered vaquita porcoise.
However, he stated that Mexican relations with America were “very positive.”
