The decision will be made public by March 4, according to Reuters.
In September, the company stated that it would invest up to $95 billion in Europe in the next decade. It also announced the location of two new major European chip manufacturing plants before the year ends 2021. However, no official announcement was made.
Germany was the top choice of possible locations. The local governments in Bavaria, Magdeburg, and Dresden (eastern Germany) tried to lure the U.S. firm.
According to analysts, Intel may wait for new legislation before choosing a European site. By subsidizing the development of large-scale chip factories in Europe, the European Chips Act seeks to decrease the continent’s dependency on Asian suppliers.
Patrick Gelsinger, Chief Executive Officer, travelled to Europe in the last year. Sources say that the government subsidy, stability and availability skilled workers encouraged Gelsinger to select Germany as the location for his new company.
Many of the largest automakers in Germany have also been affected by the chip shortage.
Magdeburg, a tiny city in Saxony Anhalt, is the capital. The city is home to the Otto von Guericke University. There’s also space in the Eulenberg Industrial Area in the southwest.
Production could begin at any time, but it is unclear when.
According to a source, Intel announced in January plans to construct a $20 billion U.S.-based chip manufacturing complex in Ohio. It is also likely to look at France and Italy as possible new European locations.
