(Reuters) – Meta Platforms will globally remove content from Russian state-controlled media outlets’ Facebook pages (NASDAQ:), Instagram accounts and posts containing links, said Nick Clegg, head of global affairs at the company.
Clegg said that the company has seen “definitely detectable” decline in its Russian services since Russia’s authorities decided to restrict Meta’s platform access. He spoke to journalists and said that there was a particular effect on video content.
Meta announced Monday that in response to Russia’s invasion Ukraine, it will restrict the access of Russian state media outlets RT, and Sputnik, on all its platforms within the European Union.
Clegg stated that the company has also been asked by other countries outside the European Union for geoblocking Russian state media. According to Clegg, he didn’t know of any requests from the United States for blocking Russian state media platforms on Meta.
